In the OCR GCSEs you will be studying Of Mice and Men for both English Language and English Literature.
For English Language you will complete a Controlled Assessment on the novel. You will produce an essay on a set title. You will be expected to produce up to 1600 words in a maximum of 4 hours.
This task will address AO3 - Studying Written Language and is 15% of your GCSE. See Controlled assessment page for details.
For English Literature you will sit a 45 minute exam paper at the end of the course.
In this exam you must answer ONE question on the novel from a choice of two. One question will be based on an extract from the novel and the other will be a more general question.
The question will address two Assessment Objectives.
AO2 Analysing Language, Structure, Form
- Explain how language, structure and form contribute to writers' presentation of
ideas, themes and settings
-Relate texts to their social, cultural and historical contexts; explain how texts have been influential and significant to self and other readers in different contexts and at different times.
This means that you have to discuss themes and characters rom the novel showing that you understand how the writer has created that character and that you can
discuss his use of langugae etc.
Also, you must show that you understand the contets behind the novel. this does
NOT mean that you wirite a history essay or huge paragraphs about the issues in
the novel, but that you comment briefly on how the characters etc. illustarte a
wider concern as you discuss that character or theme.
